Best Bar None in Sheffield - 2010/11

Best Bar None was successfully piloted in Sheffield last year, so has been run again in 2010/11.

The Best Bar None scheme started in Manchester in 2003 to address crime fuelled by alcohol and to make the night time safer for residents and visitors.  It works by setting a standard that licensed premises taking part in the scheme must meet.  The standard covers measures to deter crime and disorder, prevent underage drinking and promote public safety.  The success of the scheme has caused it to spread through the country and over 95 towns and cities across the UK now take part and the scheme is even been taken up in other countries.

At the launch of the 2010/11 scheme in May, 56 premises expressed an interest.  Of these, 47 eventually completed the assessment process successfully and gained accreditation. The highest scoring premises went through to the judging process—the judges included representatives of the Council, Police, Fire & Rescue, Licence Watch and John Gaunt Solicitors, who are one of the sponsors of the event.  The judges have now made their decision and selected a winner for each of the four sections: bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants, and an overall winner.  This will remain a closely guarded secret until it is announced at the Awards Ceremony on 26 January 2011.

All premises which are accredited are entitled to display a plaque outside their door, telling potential customers that this is a place where they can enjoy a night out, knowing that the licensees have taken care to protect their safety.
